After the success of our Summer Painterly pack we're back with a further addition to the Flypaper line-up. We're thrilled to present this new Spring seasons Painterly pack! 

Inspired by the French Impressionists, we've produced a pack with soft painterly brush strokes, pastel spring skies,  French country linens and impesto painted linen effects. All designed to be just as easy to use as our previous offerings. This fifth set will also compliment the highly popular Lensbaby and soft focus photography.
Amazingly, we've crammed in 40 full size professional textures; 38 squares and 2 bonus landscape formats, all for just $40!

Over the next few weeks we'll be posting our full texture recipes here on the blog and will show the new pack in use along with our classic textures!

Spring Painterly Pack

The textures are  unique and high quality,  the 38 square textures are 4000 by 4000 px and the two rectangles are around 6000 by 4000 px, all are 300dpi and can be used for your personal or commercial work. All our textures can be used in any editing programme that supports the use of layers, Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Gimp etc

Grunge Spring

This is the flower of the onion weed or Allium triquetrum  -not one of my favourite plants as it spreads so readily and is very hard to get rid of once you have it.  Apparently it can be used to replace spring onions in cooking so it does have its uses. It does have pretty flowers ,  just as long as you don't get too close -the smell of onions is pretty strong.

I decided to give this one a quick and easy  grungy treatment.

Wish you were here....

This was taken at a lovely little beach called Bobby's Head about half an hour north of Dunedin which is now a wildlife reserve,  there's been much planting over the past 15 or so years to restore the area to its natural state after years of farming. The beach has wonderfully golden sands and is bordered at the south end by fascinating sandstone cliffs. It's a habitat of the rare Yellow-eyed penguins and we were lucky enough to see some, one on the beach and the other at its nest up a cliff. Unfortunately as usual I had the wrong lens on the camera for taking photos of wildlife -wide angle lenses are good for landscapes but not for penguins.

Now the processing, it's hard to tell from the finished photo but it was actually quite overcast and dull when we were at the beach, textures (and a bit of photoshop magic) have turned a dull late winter day into summer!

Pistachio @ overlay 58 % using a layer mask I removed the texture from the sky. This texture accentuated the orange of the sand.
Lavender skies @ Soft light 95% just on the sky
Next I added a sky layer from my archives to add some drama, it was a blue sky with clouds and I used it at overlay 100%
Oxford Parchment @ overlay 100% masked off the sky, another texture which warmed the sand.
Purple Haze@Overlay 100% I used a graduated mask on this layer to remove some of the texture from the lower portion of the photo
Finally to tweak the sky colour I used two colour fill layers
A Bright yellow @  Overlay 24%
Aqua  colour @ Screen 21%  -both these layers were just used on the sky.

Pistachio, Oxford Parchment and Purple Haze are from the Summer Painterly Set, Lavender Skies is from Tex Box 2

Daisies

Some soft pastel prettiness to start the week. Flowers are in short supply here at the end of our New Zealand winter but spring can't be far away, I noticed a solitary crocus in flower in my garden the other day, which reminds me I must go and check to see if the snowdrops are flowering.  Talking of snow, thankfully we've not had any here this winter although there was some on the hills yesterday, just hope I've not spoken too soon.

On to the processing, I decided a light soft painterly feel was the best for this one. All textures are from the Summer painterly pack.
Iridescent brush@ overlay 52%
Brushed rose @ soft light 62%
Cobalt cloud@ hard light 27 % this layer gave the slight blue tone.
A little of the texture was removed  from the focus flower in each of the above layers, I used a layer mask and a soft brush to do this.
And it was done.
Not a big change but sometimes subtle is best :-)

Passion

I bought these lovely wrinkly black New Zealand passionfruit today especially for photographic purposes, always a good excuse! Likewise the tamarillos, which must be amongst my favourite fruit. Unfortunately neither of these delicious fruit grow outdoors down here in southern New Zealand, but the tamarillo's at least grow almost like weeds further north. I'm jealous!
I suspect this still life composition is going to be a work in progress or at least it will be as long as the fruit lasts....we had tamarillos for desert tonight!

Anyway the processing.
I only used one texture in this so it was fairly simple.
After duplicating the background I added
Sahara Saddle (Summer Painterly) @ Soft Light 72% this was de-saturated a little using a Hue saturation adjustment and with a little texture softly brushed from the focus passionfruit using a layer mask.
To tone down the larger lemon a little I added
Sahara Saddle @ soft light 25% de-saturated as before. The texture was just applied to the lemon.

Fresh

These are the berries of the European Spindle or Euonymus europaeus more commonly called the Spindleberry, or at least that's what I've always called it. The name comes from the fact that its dense pale wood is easily worked and was once used for making spindles and knitting needles. For most of the year it's just another green shrub, but in autumn it transforms -the leaves turn a russet shade and it's covered with these pink "fruit" which contain bright orange seeds. I remember the bush my mother had just down the path, it was where the tea pot was always emptied (real tea not the tea bag variety) as apparently spindles loved tea leaves, it always rewarded us with a brilliant display of autumn colour, and rewarded the birds with lots of berries.

I processed this as follows:
Brushed Rose (Summer Painterly) @ Overlay 100%
Pistachio (Summer Painterly) @ Overlay 100%
Copy of background @ Soft Light 12%
Ming (Tex Box 2) @ Soft Light 100 %
It looked okay like this but was a bit bright.
So I then merged all these layers, on PC press Ctrl -Alt -Shift -E
Duplicated the merged layer and set it at Screen 10%
Then tweaked the toning with Selective colour and Hue saturation blending modes, the settings are a matter of taste and involves a bit of "playing" with the various sliders.

Snow Road

I have just returned from a wonderful long weekend at Lake Tekapo which is nestled at  the base of New Zealand's Southern Alps. While the weather wasn't perfect, the magnificent snowy mountains were hidden from view by low cloud most of the time. Fortunately, I did manage to capture several soft misty atmospheric scenes, which we find are perfect for texture processing.
This photo was taken on the road down from the Roundhill ski area high above the glacier fed Lake Tekapo. I certainly got my snow fix up there!

Now the processing, because of the subject matter I wanted to keep it relatively simple.
Pistachio @ overlay 100% with some of the texture removed from the road as it made it too green.
Pistachio @ soft light 100% I desaturated this layer a little because at full saturation the greenness was overwhelming the subject
Touchstone @ soft light 64 % this one probably wasn't necessary but it added depth.
Sariel Leather @ soft light 41%

Symphony

In winter when there aren't many flowers around you really appreciate anything that even looks like a flower, I spied these at the local botanic garden overhanging a path and couldn't resist a photo. I have a previous photo of these on Flickr but decided to give this one the Flypaper Summer painterly treatment.

The processing was simple!
Brushed Rose @ vivid light 58%
Absinthe Vert @ Hard light  61%

I'm loving our new Flypaper pack and am hoping to try them out on some snowy winter scenes soon as I'm away for a few days break at Lake Tekapo near NZ's Southern Alps.

New Fly Edges Texture Pack!

Ever needed the original Alice in Wonderland photographic look?
Did you yearn for a natural large plate format photographic feel?
Have you ever wanted natural un-contrived edges that are not the everyday humdrum TTV retro, but something a little bit special?
Then this is the product for you!:-)

At long last, we launch our new one-off, cool toned, metallised glass texture pack! Its made with all those people in mind who over the past months have requested edges from us. However this isn't any old edges pack! This is a connoisseurs edges pack that includes all over iridescent grunge goodness!

These edges derive from 100 year + antique French glass silvered plates, lovingly scanned in TIF, then cleaned and processed in a secret way we have developed ourselves, to show only grunge, without the original image. These were produced to be as widely used as possible, both in their original format, or cut and pulled square.

As with all our products we have a minimum sized side of 4000 pixels by 5000. The length being around 30% wider than our previous textures @ 13" x 17" approx inches in 300 dpi for perfect printing and happily usable with your landscape formats. All our textures can be used in  any editing programme that supports the use of  layers,  Photoshop, Photoshop Elements,  Gimp etc

These edges can be used in conjunction with our Normal flypapers or on their own. We're really looking forward to framing our new look with you over the next few months!

Ghostly

I'm really enjoying the versatility of our new Fly Edge textures. I've used them as straight texture without the edges but here I decided that the grungy look would enhance this image.

To start with, I roughly cloned some colour into the upper pale section of the photo
The processing was really simple. I used the same texture 3 times.
Fly Edge #21 @ Overlay 65%
Fly Edge #21 @ Hard light 51%
Fly Edge #21 @ multiply 56% (this was to darken the top of the image so I used a graduated mask to remove a little of the texture from the already dark lower section of the photo)
After a final curves adjustment to tweak the tone, it was done.

Bounty

Almost every time I go to the beach I come home with a pocket full of small shells and stones and suchlike. Most of these ones came from a beach near the entrance to our harbour where there are lots of these tiny treasures underfoot.
I processed these with textures from our new Fly Edges pack. I only used two of the edges here, but could have used a different combo and got quite a different look. I am enjoying the effect the new textures give and their versatility, they make great textures as well as edges given the right photo.
The recipe is as follows, I used both edges with their edges showing.

Fly edge 2 @ Screen 52%
Fly edge 21 @ soft light 100% (I inverted this layer but it probably wasn't necessary)
Hue Saturation layer to make things soft and lighter
Copy of background @ Soft Light 64%
Fly edge 21@ Overlay 100% with a little texture removed from the centre
A curves layer to tweak the tone and contrast..
