Roman bridge into mist

Welcome to the Autumn seasons textured images! Here's another from my misty morning set, our local ancient Roman bridge into our little old Beziers! Of our several crossings Its my favorite bridge, its both narrow and winding and takes just one lane of light traffic.
Its also historic as its the bridge that the medieval army of crusaders crossed to slaughter most of the Cities inhabitants kicking off the start of the bloody Albigensian Crusade, all of which was chronicled in Kate Mosse's recent blockbuster mystery novel, Labyrinth which was recently filmed in our area for a big UK based studio TV mini series, due out next year!

The image was shot in portrait format, the excess sky being cropped off the top, which might be very useful negative space if used as say, a book cover for Getty, but for its pure drama, I felt this was the right crop.

There are two post processed versions, this is the final darker one, the other is much paler and more ethereal but also stands on its own.
In this new rectangular Autumnal set we used many French names to enhance its seasonal perfumed motif, here I used just two, Quelques Fleurs - meaning, some flowers. And Contre Jour, meaning fittingly, against the light!

Quelques Fleurs - Soft Light @ 45%

Contre Jour - Overlay @ 100%

I then flattened the image and was happy with it, but decided to push the processing by doubling up the image and used Multiply to beef up the image and bring out the blue tones in the sky.

The Jetty

Welcome to the new Summer Season of Painterly Flypaper!
Before we had only been able to hint at new textures used, and frankly this was very frustrating, having new textures but not being able to give the game away about the new painterly theme!

So, for this first simple tutorial, I chose a picture from a roasting hot Thursday afternoon, at the famous port of Grau-du-Roi,
near Montpellier and on the edge of the famous Camargue.
On the horizon can be seen the strange pyramid-like white structures which are the French's answer to the Spanish 1960's/70's high rise holiday apartments. These are now very popular with Parisians and the Montpellier well-healed.

As it was on a high summer mid-afternoon I had to Shoot with my trusty polarized filter, so's not to lose the depth in those deep blue & green tones.

I've been told it has the quality of a Dutch Vermeer painting.
Naturally I'm happy with this!

Summer Painterly textures used:
Nimbus Clouds - Soft Light - @ 66%
Turtle Shell - Soft Light - @ 60% -
(Turtle shell removed from boats and people to keep the fresh whites)
A final 50% auto colour tweak and contrast after merging layers to finish!

This picture shows the image before the colour tweak, the final large version can now be seen along with a satellite map location on Flickr

Canal avenue

Having started this image months ago I abandoned it.
Jill reminded me of it and so I reluctantly had another go!

I used the original textured image and simply added more.
It created this picture up on Fickr.
Unfortunately the quality was too small as a 'keeper'
being only 72 dpi, so I started again.

The original photographs were taken on Capestang's temporary winter dam in the middle of the canal, a kind of island made of the mud from the winter closure and clean-up of the canals basin.
This picture is made up of 3 joined up pictures. The water, horizon and sky, a kind of Landscape layer cake, then merged with Autopanopro.
It was then cleaned up with the old painterly effect and this recipe.
My idea was to get an old french impressionistic painting effect on old linen. You can see the Necropolis/linen texture in the waters shadows, this was achieved by the use of the Pin Light filter.
I hope to continue with more of this effect in future posts!

Cyprus Haze Overlay @ 100%
Necropolis Hue @ 34%
Necropolis Luminosity @ 100%
Base image Soft Light @ 27%
Base image Hard Light @ 100%
Base image Pin Light @ 100%
Antique Liaisons Soft Light @ 27%

m e s s e n g e r

A dull afternoon on the beach found me on my knees trying to get a low level shot. Overcast days are perfect to try moody, grainy textures.
The idea behind this picture was 'a Message in a bottle', but from the bottles perspective!
The Lime Plaster somehow helps give that 'old distorted glass effect' .

Tex Pack Two textures were:
Lime Plaster ~ opacity ~ Overlay @ 27%
Lost Void ~ opacity ~ Overlay @ 100%
Lost Void flipped vertical ~ Opacity ~ Overlay @ 100%
Voyageur Map ~ opacity ~ Soft Light @ 97%
Ming ~ opacity ~ Overlay @ 100%
Ming's colour was changed to a Prussian blue with the Hue/Saturation sliders. The combination of Voyageur Map and Ming used here is a real winning combo!
Finally, as I'm all for an easy life, a new thing I've tried is to first re-size my images to 4000 x 4000 Pixels*.
This is the same size as the Flypaper textures. Thus simply enabling dropping of the same size on top of the base image, saving the laborious 'pushing and pulling' our textures into shape! :-)

*Changing to 4000 x 4000 pixels
Firstly, You need to crop your image square, then go to the top of the page and select Image - image size - width, change the top box to 4000 pixels
And make sure your resolution is 300 pixels/inch. Press save.
Its easy:-)
